Translation

There is a fish in the North Sea whose name is Kun. The Kun is so large that it is not known how many thousands of li it is. The Kun changed into a bird, and the name of the bird was Peng. The roc's back, it is not known how many thousand li it is. Rising up and flying, its wings are like clouds hanging in the sky. This bird, when the sea moves and the wind rises will move to the South China Sea. The South Sea is the pool of nature. Qi Harmony is a record of weirdness. The words of Qi Harmony say: "When the Peng moves to the South China Sea, it lifts its wings and beats the water, and the waves of the water reach thousands of miles. It flew up tens of thousands of miles in a whirlwind ring. By virtue of the June gale it leaves the North Sea." The mist in the mountains and fields and the dust in the air are the result of the creature blowing against each other with its breath. The sky is deep blue, is that its true color? Or is it because the sky is so high and far away that you can't see the end of it? When the roc looks down from a high altitude, it is nothing more than that. Besides, if the accumulation of water is not deep, then it has no power to load a large ship. If you pour a cup of water on a low-lying place in the hall, then you can only take the grass as its boat, and if you put a cup on it, it will stick to the ground, because the water is too shallow and the boat is too big. If the wind's accumulation is not large, then it has no power to bear great wings. That is why the roc flies tens of thousands of miles up in the air, with the wind beneath it, before it can ride the wind. With the green sky on its back, nothing can hinder it before it intends to fly south. The cicada and the turtle dove laughed at the roc, saying, "I take off at once, and stop when I hit an elm tree, a sandalwood tree, or some other trees, and sometimes if I can't fly up, I just fall to the ground. Where is the need to fly tens of thousands of miles up in the air and then fly south?" Those who go to the countryside only need to prepare three meals a day, and come back with a full stomach; those who go to a distance of 100 miles, the first night to pound rice and store up dry food; those who go to a distance of thousands of miles, to use several months to store up dry food. And what do these two little animals know?

The little wise do not know the great wise, and the short-lived do not know the long-lived. By what right do they know it is so? The morning fungus doesn't know the beginning and end of a month, and the cicada doesn't know that there is spring and fall in a year. This is the short-lived. In the southern part of the state of Chu, there is a tree like the meditating spirit, which takes five hundred years as spring and five hundred years as autumn; and in ancient times, there was a great tsubaki tree, which took eight thousand years as spring and eight thousand years as autumn; and this is the long-lived one. Now Pangzu alone is famous for his longevity, and is it not sad that men in general compare themselves with him?

The Tangwang Thorn is like this. In the very wild and far north, where no grass grows, there is the deep black sea, the pool of nature. There is a fish there which is thousands of miles wide, and there is no one who knows its length. Its name is Kun. There was a bird there, whose name was Peng, and the back of the Peng was like Tarzan, and its wings were like the clouds that hang in the sky. The roc flew up tens of thousands of miles in a whirlwind, through the clouds, carrying the green sky on its back, and then intended to fly southward, going to the South China Sea. The rebukes laughed at it and said, "Where is it going? I jumped and flew upward, not more than a few feet high, and then fell down, and flew about in the midst of the fluff, which is the highest limit of flying, and where is it going to fly to?" This is the difference between the small and the great. So those whose talents are sufficient to confer an official position, whose character is agreeable to a party, whose morals are in accordance with the mind of a sovereign, and whose abilities inspire confidence in the people of a country, they regard themselves as repulsive and so forth. Song Rongzi scornfully scoffed at these people. Besides, when the whole society praised Song Rongzi, he did not become more diligent, and when the whole society reproached him, he did not become more discouraged. He was able to recognize the distinction between self and external things, and to discern the boundaries of honor and disgrace, and that was the end of it. He did not strive for anything in the world. In spite of this, there were still realms that were not established. Lie Zi flew on the wind, floating lightly, and returned only after fifteen days. He was not desperately pursuing anything in regard to inviting good fortune. This was done without the need to walk, but still by virtue of the wind. As for those who follow the nature of all things in heaven and earth and grasp the changes of the six qi, while roaming in the boundless realm, what else do they rely on? So it is said: the supreme man has no ego, the divine man has no merit, and the sage has no reputation.
