On May 20, 2006, the Nu Fairy Festival declared by Gongshan Dulong Nu Autonomous County was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage, numbered ⅹ-24.

Fairy Festival is also called "Flower Festival". One view of the origin of Nvxian Festival comes from primitive worship, and the other view is that the matriarchal clan of the early Nu people respected women. It is held on March 15th of the lunar calendar every year for three days. Festival activities include offering sacrifices to the fairy cave and welcoming holy water, singing and dancing for happiness, and sports competitions.

Historical origin

The origin of Nvxian Festival began with a fairy worshipped by the ancestors of Nvxian in ancient times. According to legend, this fairy is a beautiful girl named Arong. People call her a fairy and worship her very much.

Later, the vicious leader wanted to occupy Aron. Ah Rong had to hide in a cave deep in Gaoligong Mountain. The leader chased the cave and asked Ah Rong to come out and marry him, but Ah Rong didn't agree. So, on the fifteenth day of the third lunar month, the chief set fire to Miss Aron in the cave.

Bloom is warm in spring in March, and flowers bloom on both sides of the Nujiang River. In memory of the clever and strong girl, Ah Rong, Nu compatriots designated this day as a flower festival, which was worshipped on this day every year, and later gradually formed the custom of Fairy Festival.
