Fuzhou folk culture

Fuzhou men are considerate and careful at home. Doing business, being an official and studying abroad all advocate Neo-Confucianism, stress the doctrine of the mean and pay attention to image, so that there is a saying that "Fuzhou people do face", which is passed down as a beautiful talk. Fuzhou women are lazy, love playing mahjong, don't do or are not good at housework, and there is even a saying that "good men don't take Fuzhou women", which is also well known; However, you may not know that the formation of these habits of Fuzhou people is inseparable from the history of Fujian. Fujian people were originally descendants of Fujian and Vietnam, and Fujian is actually the hinterland of the country where Gou Jian, the king of Vietnam, went. Later, because the descendants of the King of Yue had nothing to do with Liu Bangnan, the great ancestor of the Han Dynasty, the kingdom of Fujian and Vietnam was rebuilt. Fujian once became a strong country in the southeast, and its people were rich. Since then, Fuzhou has been the capital of the southeast, just like Chengdu's status in Sichuan now. Since then, due to the large volume of Fuzhou, other state capitals in Fujian are relatively small, belonging to the situation of big capitals and small cities. Therefore, from then on, Fuzhou locals, like Beijingers now, feel that they are a kind of "imperial root", more cattle and snobbish. With the continuous development of Fuzhou's economy, more and more people from eight counties and surrounding cities come to Fuzhou to do business, and they are getting richer and richer. In order to settle down and live in Fuzhou and become real Fuzhou people, they rushed to marry Fuzhou women. Because these men (that is, the main body of Fuzhou men later) have no power and family relatives in Fuzhou, they have gradually formed the image and tradition of model husbands in order to rely on the influence of their wives' families in Fuzhou. In the past, local men in Fuzhou studied Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism seriously in the family education of "learning to be excellent and being an official". Most of them have married foreign women, and those who fail to live up to expectations have to follow them in order to marry local women in Fuzhou.

At the end of the Tang Dynasty, Huang Chao crossed Fujian, and the officials appointed by the Tang Dynasty fled in succession in the face of Huang Chao's army. Only Chen Yan, a native of Jianzhou (Fujian Province), finally became the actual ruler of Fujian by relying on his own Kowloon Army. However, under the background of local tyrants' self-division, Chen Yan did not really master Fujian. He can only control Jianzhou and Fuzhou. In the first year of Guangqi in Tang Xizong (885), an immigrant team from northern Gwangju and Shouzhou entered Fujian. The leader of this team was originally Wang Xu of Shouzhou, but most of his subordinates were Gu Shi of Gwangju. During the Nan 'an mutiny, Wang Chao, a native of Gushi, and his brothers Wang Shenluan and Wang controlled this immigrant team. They captured Quanzhou as a base area, so most of the men in southern Fujian are descendants of this immigrant team, and they are mixed with the locals. Because this immigrant team came to Minnan, killing most of the local men and marrying local women, the men in Minnan are very strong in the family, which is called "male chauvinism".

After the death of Chen Yan, Wang Chao, a native of Gushi, captured Fuzhou and unified Fujian with his brothers Wang Shenluan and Wang in the second year of Jingfu (893). During this period, the chaos that started in Huang Chao has spread all over the country. Almost every region has a war for power, and every land is bleeding. Fortunately, after the Wang brothers seized power, taking the safety of the people as the main policy, they encouraged their brothers, generals and soldiers to marry local women in Fuzhou and integrate into the local culture in the way of doing as the Romans do. Fujian has maintained stability for more than 30 years, thus bringing Fujian into a new development period. People who can't settle down in the turmoil have taken refuge in Fujian, resulting in a substantial increase in Fujian's population. During this period, Fujian's agriculture, handicrafts and commerce all reached a high level, and its culture also developed greatly. Since then, Fujian has become a developed area comparable to the Central Plains, so many places in Fujian, especially Fuzhou, are dedicated to the temple of King Min, who is respected by Fujian people. This is why Fuzhou people call men "Tang people" (referring to people in the Tang army) and women "master wives" (referring to the wives of local people). This is why Fuzhou people and even most Fujian people say that their ancestral home is Henan.

In the third year of Tongguang in the later Tang Dynasty (925), Wang died of illness, and his son established Fujian the following year. Since then, Fujian has entered a period of political turmoil. Most of the leaders in Fujian died in a palace coup, and the contradiction between the Wang brothers later developed into a civil war. As a result, in the third year of Bao Da in Southern Tang Dynasty (945), Wang Min was destroyed by Southern Tang Dynasty, and Wu Yueguo also took the opportunity to invade Fujian and control Fuzhou. Southern Tang Dynasty and wuyue competed for Fujian, and Quanzhou took the opportunity to separate Quanzhou from Zhangzhou, so Fujian formed a situation of three points between Fujian and soil. In 960, the Song Dynasty was founded. Under the strong pressure of the Song Dynasty, the Southern Tang Dynasty perished. Chen, the Qian family of Wu Yueguo and the successor of the independent regime, was forced to provide land to the Song Dynasty, so the Song Dynasty unified Fujian in 978.
