When Zhao Wuling Wang was on the throne during the Warring States period, the state of Zhao was in a period of decline, and even small neighboring countries like Zhongshan often came to intrude. Especially, Zhao was geographically bounded by Donghu in the northeast, Xiongnu in the north, and Linhu and Louhou in the northwest. These tribes were all nomadic and skilled in horseback riding and archery, and they often invaded Zhao's borders with their cavalry.
King Wuling of Zhao saw that the Hu people had some special strengths in military dress: they wore narrow-sleeved short jackets, which made it easier to live and live and to hunt and fight; and they used cavalry, bows and arrows in battle, which gave them greater flexibility and mobility than the chariots of soldiers and spears of the Middle Kingdom.
