The time and reason of the name of the wide and narrow alley

Wide and Narrow Alley was named in the 57th year of the Kangxi period because of the historical changes and urban development during the Qing Dynasty.

During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, the urban pattern and architectural style of Chengdu gradually changed. In the 57th year of the Kangxi period (1718 AD), after the pacification of the Jungarian Rebellion, more than a thousand soldiers were chosen to garrison Chengdu, and the city of Manjung was built on the basis of the lesser city of that year. Through historical changes and years of baptism, the Full City gradually evolved and eventually formed the present Broad and Narrow Alley.

The Broad and Narrow Alley initially had three alleys, Jing Alley, Narrow Alley and Broad Alley, which were all parallel. These three alleys were not wide or narrow at first, and their names were Xingren Hutong, Taiping Hutong and Ruyi Hutong. During the Qing Dynasty, this area was inhabited by soldiers of the eight banners of Manchu and Mongolian, as well as some dignitaries. As time went by, the houses here were gradually acquired, and the family properties of the Banners were gradually reduced, forming a situation in which the descendants of the Banners, the dignitaries and the peddlers **** lived.

Republic of China thirty-seven years (1948), in a city survey, the staff will be a wider alley labeled "Wide Alley", a narrower one labeled "Narrow Alley". This is the reason why the wide and narrow alleys got their names.

Characteristics of Wide and Narrow Alley

The architecture of Wide and Narrow Alley is compact, unlike the four-square buildings of the Central Plains, which are built according to the topography of Chengdu. Most of the houses in the alley are two-story, with a reasonable layout, giving full consideration to lighting and ventilation. Secondly, the architectural style of the Broad and Narrow Alley is simple and elegant, which not only retains the unique style of the western Sichuan folk houses, but also incorporates the architectural elements of the northern courtyard. The houses on both sides of the alley are mostly green bricks and black tiles, with wooden doors and windows, exquisite carvings and harmonious color schemes.

This is where the soldiers of the eight banners of Manchu and Mongolian who were stationed in Chengdu during the Qing Dynasty lived, and it was also a place of commercial prosperity in Chengdu's history. Today, the Broad and Narrow Alley has become a distinctive neighborhood integrating leisure, culture, tourism and commerce, attracting a large number of tourists.
