Expanded Information

Suez Canal, the dividing line between Asia and Africa, but also the most direct waterway between Asia and Africa and Europe. To the west of the canal is the low-lying delta of the Nile River, and to the east, higher up, is the uneven and arid Sinai Peninsula. Prior to the construction of the canal, the only significant settlement adjacent to it was the city of Suez. Most of the other towns along the coast grew up after the canal was built.

Topographically, Suez is not homogeneous, with three shallow, water-filled depressions: Lake Manzala and Lake Timsah and the Bitter Lake, the latter of which varies in size but forms a constant sheet of water.

The Suez Canal passes through the Isthmus of Suez, which connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The isthmus is composed of marine sediments, coarse sand and gravel accumulated during earlier periods of rainfall, alluvial soil from the Nile River (especially in the north), and wind-blown sand. Canals dug at the isthmus to communicate with the ocean or sea would save sea voyages.
