The wood member support has poor durability, poor adaptability to tunnel shape, troublesome and unsafe support replacement, and disturbance to surrounding rock, so it has been rarely used at present. Steel member support has the advantages of good durability and strong adaptability to tunnel shape, and can be replaced in construction, which is safer. The mining method with steel members as temporary support is called "back plate method" in domestic tunnel industry.

Steel-wood member support is similar to the anthropological system of "load-structure" on the ground. As a measure to maintain tunnel stability, it is intuitive and effective, and it is also easy to be understood and mastered by construction workers. Therefore, this method is often used in tunnels where shotcrete and anchor support is not convenient. Because the design working state of lining is inconsistent with the actual working state, there are also some defects in temporary support, which limit its development and application to some extent.
