Amish are a group of Protestant Baptist Mennonites in Pennsylvania, USA. They are famous for refusing modern facilities such as cars and electricity and living a simple life. Amish are descendants of German-Swiss immigrants, who have inherited the tradition and have a close religious organization. Most Amish people speak a unique highland German dialect at home, also known as Pennsylvania German. The so-called "Swiss Amish" speak a dialect of Alemannic (they call it "Swiss").

Amish communities exist in 22 states in the United States and Ontario in Canada. The largest gathering places are Lancaster County in Pennsylvania and Holmes County in Ohio. There are about 228,000 Amish people in the United States and about 1.5 million people in Ontario, Canada.
