What is the origin of the Cold Food Festival
There are different accounts of the origin of the Cold Food Festival. The most widely circulated folk saying is to commemorate the Spring and Autumn Period Jin . Jie Zi Tui.
During the Spring and Autumn Period, the Prince of the State of Jin, Chong Er, fled the country and lived a hard life, and Jie Zi Pui, who followed him, did not hesitate to cut off a piece of meat from his own leg to make him hungry. Later, when Chong Er returned to Jin, he became the king of the state (i.e. Duke Wen of Jin) and rewarded his meritorious officials. Only Jie Zi Tui refused to accept the reward. He took his mother to live in seclusion in Mianshan Mountain and refused to come out. Duke Wen of Jin had no choice but to set fire to the mountain to force him to come down. Jie Zi push mother and son would rather be burnt to death than to come out. In order to commemorate Jie Zi Tui, Duke Wen of Jin ordered to rename Mian Shan as Jie Shan, and to build a temple and a monument. At the same time, he also ordered that on the day of Jie Zi Tui's death, "cold food and fire ban", the whole country is not allowed to burn the fire to cook food, can only eat dry food and cold food.
