The "hibachi" is a Han Chinese custom during the Spring Festival, and a ritual where people gather to eat and talk about wine. But Nian was afraid of the sound of firecrackers and the color red, so on the 30th day of the Lunar Calendar, people would put up Spring Festival couplets and red lanterns in every house to drive away the demon.
At night, people would "stay up late" to prevent a sudden attack by the Nian. When they were hungry, they would heat food in a copper stove to stave off hunger, so the traditions of "surrounding the stove" and "staying up all night" have been preserved.
