Have you ever heard of "birds fly to the phoenix"?

It is a famous Han folk music, which evokes people's love for nature and memories of working life with warm and cheerful melody. In the music, we seem to hear cuckoo, partridge, swallow, tit, bluebird, thrush, lark, blue wax mouth and other birds singing, as if there is a cock crow, which means that the night is about to disappear and the sun is about to rise in the morning!

It is an art film, based on craftsmen, ingenuity and craftsmanship, and tells the story of modern people's persistence in ancient inheritance. I don't know how many stories and lives, like those old crafts that faded out of our memory, were absorbed into the quiet curtain call.

It is also a national style picture book, and its pictures are a collection of Dunhuang murals, landscape paintings, boundary paintings, embroidery, pastel porcelain and many other traditional China artistic elements, which are seamless and wonderful. The colors used in the whole picture book are mainly the colors on China ancient porcelain, which is unique. In terms of color matching, it also tries to combine ancient rhyme with modern aesthetics, jumping smartly and showing the beauty of integration of tradition and modernity.

On August 20 19, at Beijing BIBF International Book Fair, the winning works of the second Golden Key Picture Book Creation Competition were announced. Among them, a picture book full of strong national aesthetic feeling, Hundred Birds Facing the Phoenix, stood out from more than 200 picture book works, was unanimously recognized by seven professional judges at home and abroad, and finally won the gold medal.

A Hundred Birds at the Phoenix tells an old folk story in China.

Long, long ago, the feathers of the phoenix were not so beautiful now. It's just the most humble bird in the forest. One year, the forest was hit by drought, and the birds couldn't find food, so they were all hungry. At this time, Phoenix hurriedly took out the fruits she had accumulated for many years and distributed them to the birds in the forest. With food, all the birds survived the drought.

Later, the birds were very grateful to Phoenix and unanimously recommended it as the "Bird King". The parrot suggested, "Let's pluck the most beautiful feathers from ourselves and make a dazzling' bird suit' for Phoenix." The birds responded, scrambling to give their most beautiful feathers.

Since then, Phoenix has become the "king of birds", and it has become the most dazzling bird in the forest with its beautiful and colorful "bird clothes". Every year on Phoenix's birthday, all the birds in the forest come to congratulate it. This is the famous legend of "a hundred birds pay homage to the phoenix".

We can easily find that the kindness, diligence and willingness to share of Phoenix, or the gratitude of other birds to Phoenix, belong to the essence of China's traditional virtues, and are especially suitable for making children's picture books as the spiritual core.

John young, a master of literature in Tsinghua University, has a keen interest in the traditional culture of China. He hopes to convey the most authentic "Chinese beauty" to children through picture books. In order to realize his wish, he made a special trip to the French Higher Institute of Decorative Arts for further study, specializing in China traditional culture and creative design. After returning home, he drew this picture book with a strong Chinese style-"A Hundred Birds at the Phoenix".

In this set of national style picture books, john young is ingenious, using modern techniques to interpret the beauty of traditional art in China, combining various artistic creation techniques such as Han Dynasty portrait bricks, Dunhuang murals, landscape paintings and embroidery, which is magnificent and poetic. It not only promotes children's interest in China's traditional art, but also conveys China's traditional virtues such as kindness, sharing and hard work to children and educates them in reading.

As children grow older, it is particularly important to understand and identify with their own culture. Chinese-style picture books are closer to children's lives. They can not only appreciate the beauty of illustrations, but also feel the infiltration and nourishment of China culture.

In the picture book "A Hundred Birds at the Phoenix", every plot can subtly introduce excellent traditional virtues into children's hearts. Although it is neither preaching nor reciting, I believe that children will benefit from it one day and at some time in the future.

For this reason, once published, "A Hundred Birds at the Phoenix" won unanimous praise from picture book experts at home and abroad. As the famous picture book author Zhu commented:

This is a beautiful picture book, the picture is international, and Chinese and foreign readers will like it. Among them, a large number of China elements are applied, and the colors are very harmonious, which truly appeals to both refined and popular tastes!
