What are the traditional houses of Zulu people like?
Zulu is an African nation, proud and polite. Zulu has been an independent country in southern Africa for centuries. Their traditional territory Zululan is part of KwaZulu-natal province.
The traditional Zulu folk house is a kind of "honeycomb" straw house, also known as IquQuana. In many villages, the style of houses is still honeycomb, but sometimes they are built with modern building materials such as bricks and tin. Longdoor is a modern Zulu thatched cottage with a thatched roof and brick walls.
To build a traditional straw house, men need to collect strong tender branches. According to the size of the house, they put branches in a circle to make a roof, and put a hard pole or trunk in the center of the house for support. Zulu women mix weaving grass, cutting reeds and soil to make walls. This mixture can make the straw house waterproof.
