Analysis:

The concept of lock is likely to appear independently in different parts of the world. Ancient China people had a simple lock that could be opened with a sickle-shaped or hook-shaped key. Locks like this have existed in China for at least 4000 years, maybe earlier.

The ancient Egyptians also used locks to protect their property. These locks are slightly more complicated than porcelain locks. Egyptian locks are equipped with a series of locking pins with different lengths, which match the locking pins protruding from the outside of the key. Only those keys with precise pin length are suitable for specific locks. Unlike modern locks made of hard metal, Egyptian locks are made of wood.

The Romans adopted the Egyptian idea of locks. They introduced new functions, such as a spring to press the locking pin. The Romans brought locks with this feature to conquered Europe, West Asia and Africa.

In the Middle Ages, locks became very complicated. Huge mechanical devices, such as gears, levers and springs, can often be seen on the covers of boxes and safes where businessmen and priests store valuables.

Right: In Roman times, in order to ensure the safety of houses, shops and wooden cabinets containing valuables, locks and keys were very common. This Roman bronze lock plate comes from France. It was held in place by a huge big-headed nail.

The modern Yale lock was invented by Linus Yale in 1960s of 19, and it is still widely used today. It is a locking pin device based on ancient Egyptian locks.
