Danqing refers to the two colors commonly used in ancient China painting, which refers to painting.

The ancients had not invented colored pigments. Among the few colors such as lead powder, realgar, ochre, azurite and cinnabar, "Dan" (red cinnabar) and "cyan" (blue azurite) are commonly used in ancient paintings.

Because "Dan" and "Blue" are the warmest and coldest colors and can produce the most vivid contrast on the picture, the ancients used "Dan Qing" to refer to the picture.

Later, Danqing painting developed into two branches of Chinese painting: meticulous painting and heavy color painting.
