What does Taipa mean?

The geographical name of Macau, Taipa is located just south of the Macau Peninsula and north of Coloane Island, geographically in the center of the city.

Located about 2.5 kilometers south of the Macau Peninsula and across the sea to the west from the small island of Hengqin in the city of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, Taipa has an area of 7.9 square kilometers, (2019), and a population of about 104,000 people. Taipa is home to both Portuguese-style neighborhoods such as Lung Wan Portuguese Rhythm, Rua de Guan Yai, and Rua de Tibao, as well as large-scale modern constructions such as the Macau Stadium and the Macau Jockey Club.

Taipa is the island of Taipa (dàng), also known as Taipa, and was known as Tam Chai, Cock's Neck, Dragon's Neck, Dragon's Neck, Dragon's Neck, and Dragon's Neck. As early as the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Taipa consisted of only two small hills and a harbor, which was reserved for merchant ships, and the Indians used the sea route to engage in trade with China.

Expanded Information

Taipa is an outlying island, but it is connected to Macau by three bridges: the Governor's Bridge over Taipa (commonly known as the Taipa Bridge), the Friendship Bridge, and the Sai Van Bridge, which was inaugurated in December 2004 and is the first bridge in Macau to be built over a river. The Sai Van Bridge is Macau's first double-decker bridge, with the lower deck open during typhoons to keep traffic moving between Macau and Taipa.

Macao International Airport is located on the east side of Taipa and was built on reclaimed land. Opened in 1995, the airport serves more than a dozen different cities in China and Asia. Macau International Airport is also a major transit point for Taiwanese travelers indirectly traveling to mainland China.
