The contents of ten large-scale reliefs on the Monument to the People's Heroes are classified according to the sequence of historical events.

Ten reliefs started from the east side of the monument in historical order, followed by Humen Opium Eradication, jintian uprising, Wuchang Uprising, May 4th Movement, May 30th Movement, Nanchang Uprising, Anti-Japanese Guerrilla War, Victory in Crossing the River, Liberation of China and Support for the Front.

There are 10 large white marble reliefs embedded around the base. These large reliefs are two meters high and add up to 40.68 meters long. According to geologists' tests, these reliefs can last at least 800 to 1000 years. There are about twenty heroes in each relief, each as big as a real person, and their faces, personalities, thoughts, feelings and postures are different.

Extended data:

Relief creation

The creators of the eight reliefs are:

1, painting Ai Zhongxin, carving Ceng Zhushao, and assistant Li Zhenxiang on "Eliminating Opium in Humen";

2. Li Zongjin's "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Map" carved the king;

3. Dong, painting Wuchang Uprising and carving Fu;

4. Feng Fasi, the painting of the May 4th Movement, carved by Hua Tianyou;

5. The painting of the May 30th Movement, Wu Zuoren, carved Wang Linyi;

6. "August 1 Nanchang Uprising" painted Wang Shikuo and carved Xiao Chuanjiu;

7. "War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression" painted Xin Mang and carved Zhang Songhe;

8. Han Yan painted "Crossing the Yangtze River Victory" and carved Liu Kaiqu.

Victory in crossing the river

Because Han Yan painted oil paintings crossing the Yangtze River, he designed the draft of Victory Crossing the River.

The draft was drawn three times. The first time was when soldiers charged with American helmets. Although it truly reflects the situation of crossing the river, considering the general impression of the people on the PLA, the second draft (the existing Han Yan Art Museum in Lianyungang) changed the soldiers to wear cloth hats and highlighted the images of commanders and boating migrant workers. Later, this draft was adopted when the monument was built.

It turned out that Han Yan wanted to make the painting more perfect at that time, so he created the third draft relief on the basis of the second draft, and some images of soldiers were added to this design. However, because the third draft was too long, it did not conform to the towering design scheme of the monument, and finally the second draft was adopted.

Masonry contribution

In the process of building the Monument to the People's Heroes, a group of unknown masons also played a very important role in carving the relief of the Monument.

These masons have been engaged in folk carving in China for a long time, and their traditional carving skills are very high, but they don't know much about western carving skills and have not formed a relatively unified style. If everyone's style is different, it will have a negative impact on the sculpture of the relief of the Monument to the People's Heroes. So, under the leadership of Liu Kaiqu, these masons received long-term training.

The sculptors took out their own portrait sculptures for the masons to practice. Because the white marble used in the relief is mined in Fangshan, Beijing, it is not easy to obtain complete materials. In order to ensure that the stone is not damaged, masons try to carve monument figures on the basis of practicing portrait carving.

After more than a year's practice, masons are familiar with the method from rough carving to fine carving, which effectively ensures the completion of the stone relief sculpture of the monument, and they have also grown into the first generation of outstanding stone carving artists in New China who are proficient in both eastern and western carving techniques.
