Tie-dyeing is an ancient tie-dyeing process and one of the traditional hand-dyeing techniques in China. According to a certain pattern, it sews the fabric into a certain shape with needles and threads, or directly binds it with threads, and then tightens it, so that the folded part is not easy to dye, while the unbuttoned part is easy to dye, thus forming a unique halo effect.

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, this craft had spread among the people. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the famous patterns of "purple valerian of deer fetus" and "roe valerian" appeared in history. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, twisted valerian was all the rage. The names of twisted valerian recorded in historical materials include "Dazuo Halo Valerian, Agate Valerian, Zuiyan Valerian, Fangsheng Valerian, Tuangong Valerian" and so on. Pinholes and wrinkles on the twisted yarn fabric unearthed from the tomb of Astana in Xinjiang are still faintly visible, showing the superb twisting technology in the Tang Dynasty. At the beginning of the Northern Song Dynasty, wringing technology was still popular. However, during the reign of Ren Tian, only soldiers were allowed to wear Valerian clothes, while the use of Valerian products was prohibited among the people. This provision was not abolished until the Southern Song Dynasty.

The working people in ancient China skillfully used the physical and chemical effects of dyeing process to make the fabric show a special and stepless color halo effect, which is a great achievement of ancient printing and dyeing technology in China. Nowadays, this traditional craft has attracted the attention of many artists and printing and dyeing workers. On the basis of the old twisting process, they combined with new materials and new processes to make bold innovations and rejuvenate the old tie-dyeing process.
