Origin of the name Linyi, Shandong Province

The name of Shandong first appeared in the Warring States period, when the Qin people in Guanzhong called the area east of Mount Banshan or Mount Hua Shandong, and sometimes referred to the territories of the six kingdoms other than Qin in general. By the time of the Tang Dynasty and the Northern Song Dynasty, the vast area of the Yellow River basin east of the Taihang Mountains was called Shandong, and by the end of the Tang Dynasty, some people used Shandong to refer exclusively to the land of Qilu.

To the Jin Dynasty, set up Shandong East, West two roads, Shandong really became the name of the political region. In the early Ming Dynasty, set up Shandong Province, later renamed Shandong Chengxuan Chief Secretary. In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, set up Shandong Province, "Shandong" officially became the province's name.

Linyi was named after its proximity to the Yiyi River, and in December 1994, the State Council approved the abolition of the Linyi District and the county-level Linyi City and the establishment of the prefecture-level Linyi City. The former city-level Linyi was divided into three county-level administrative districts, namely Lanshan, Hedong and Luozhuang. As of the end of 2016, prefecture-level Linyi City has jurisdiction over 3 districts of Lanshan, Luozhuang, and Hedong, and 9 counties of Tancheng, Cangshan, Junan, Yishui, Yinan, Pingyi, Feixian, Mengyin, and Linshu.
