The most peculiar village in Cambodia, the villagers live by the lake and enjoy the poor "Xanadu" life.
In my trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, apart from Angkor Wat, the "floating village" in Tonle Sap Lake is one of the places that impressed me the most, and it has a unique humanistic style in Cambodia. Tonle Sap Lake in northern Cambodia, also known as "Phnom Penh Lake", is the natural reservoir of the Mekong River, the longest river in Southeast Asia, and the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.
Located in the center of Cambodia, Tonle Sap Lake is the "Lake of Life" for the people of that country, which has nourished the people around for generations. Tonle Sap Lake has laid a solid resource guarantee for the development and prosperity of the Khmer nation. It is not only a "mother lake" that nourishes all beings, but also a popular tourist attraction, which brings many opportunities for local people to find jobs and make a living.
Tonle Sap Lake means "Great Lake" in Khmer. It is flat and wide, with a length of 500km and a width of110km, and the maximum area in rainy season is16000km2. The lake area has abundant sunshine, pleasant climate, abundant water and abundant aquatic products. The local people live by the lake, build houses by the lake and gather into villages, get along with the lake day and night, and rise and fall together with the lake, and have been living here.
Over time, the "floating village" has become a unique landscape on Tonle Sap Lake, attracting many tourists every day. However, the "floating village" is about 40 kilometers away from the urban area of Siem Reap where Angkor Wat is located. Visitors can only take a chartered bus to the "floating village" in Siem Reap, and it takes about 1 hour to reach the lake area, and then take a chartered boat from the lakeside pier to go deep into the "floating village" in the lake.
Although the traffic is a little inconvenient, you will find that coming here is definitely not for nothing, especially for me who like photography. It's like crossing into an unknown world. I didn't expect to live like this. Every diaojiao building, every citizen, every smiling face and every look here are full of freshness.
I am curious not only that I have never seen such a floating village, but also that I am eager to deeply feel the local life. I took a small wooden boat to the middle of the lake surrounded by mangroves, and a row of "diaojiao buildings" on the drainage channel came into view. I know that I have come to the "floating village", where ships come and go, some villagers arrange fishing nets on the boats, and some wash clothes on the boats, showing the original and simple water town customs everywhere.
Standing on the boat and looking around, I found that most of the diaojiao buildings on the water were dilapidated. Because they were in disrepair for a long time, they looked a little "shaky", but the villagers thrived here safely. Tonle Sap Lake is rich in aquatic products and is known as the "meat warehouse" in northern Cambodia. Most people living here make a living by fishing, and Tonle Sap Lake has raised more than 3 million people around.
Nowadays, in addition to fishing for a living, many villagers in "floating villages" have also started tourism business. Because more and more tourists come here every day, many men in the village become boatmen to take tourists to the village for sightseeing, while women paddle boats to take tourists to visit the mangroves near the "floating village" and watch the sunset in the middle of the lake.
Traveling along the "floating village" by boat, the various pictures of water life opened my eyes. At dusk, boats come and go in the "floating village". Some people wash things on the boat docked under the diaojiao building, some people bathe their children on the boat, and some people cook at home, presenting a series of primitive and simple water picture scrolls.
I was deeply moved by what I saw and heard when I visited the "floating village". Looking closely at the villagers here, although the living environment of these water residents is harsh, the sanitary conditions are extremely poor, the living materials are scarce, and some children can't even afford to go to school, I don't seem to see any troubles in their eyes. One side of the soil nourishes the other side. Perhaps this is the life portrayal of "habit becomes nature, simplicity makes happiness".
