Mongolian "Horse Milk Festival"

In mid-August this year, my second uncle went to Xinjiang on a business trip, and when he came back in September, he not only brought us nutritious and brain-boosting walnuts and tasty jujubes, but also showed us a lot of beautiful pictures of the scenery.

On this day, I asked my second uncle, "Second uncle second uncle, did you happen to run into any traditional festivals when you went to Xinjiang?"

"Hearing you say that," Erbo said after a little thought, "it seems like there really is a festival."

I pestered Erbo to tell me, so he said, "Well, I'll tell you, it's the Mongolian 'Horse Milk Festival'."

"'Horse Milk Festival'?" I asked, puzzled.

The second uncle looked at me and patiently explained.

At the end of the eighth month of the lunar calendar every year, the Mongols hold a one-day Horse Milk Festival. The Horse Milk Festival, a traditional Mongolian folk festival, is popular in the Xilingol grasslands of Inner Mongolia, with drinking horse milk wine as its main content. During this harvest season, herders wish for health, happiness and good luck, so they name the festival after the white horse milk.

Early in the morning on this day, the herdsmen, dressed in full costume and carrying horse milk wine, converge on horseback or in vehicles to reach the traditional location, kill sheep and slaughter cows. Horses are raced as the sun rises, and then horsemilk wine is drunk and blessings are said. People chant and sing to the sound of the horse-head qin and enjoy themselves until the night.

When my second uncle finished speaking, I still couldn't get enough of it, and thought to myself, "When will I go to Xinjiang to have some fun?
