I. Basic Introduction

Dwelling buildings, also known as minju, are found throughout China. Residential buildings are the most basic type of building, appearing the earliest, most widely distributed and most numerous.

Because Chinese residential buildings are distributed all over the country, due to the different historical traditions, living customs, humanistic conditions and aesthetic concepts of the people, and also due to the different natural conditions and geographic environments of different places, thus, the layout, structural methods, modeling and detailed features of residential buildings are also different, presenting simple and natural, but with their own characteristics.

Second, the most distinctive residential

In China's residential, the most distinctive are the Beijing courtyard house, the kiln caves of the Loess Plateau in the northwest, the ancient dwellings in Anhui, the Hakka Tulou in Fujian and Guangdong, and the yurts in Mongolia.

The mainstream of traditional houses in the Han region of China is the regular type of residence, taking the central axis symmetrical layout of the Beijing courtyard house as a typical representative.

Beijing courtyard houses are located in the big and small hutongs of Beijing, which are surrounded by houses in the east, south, west and north.

2. Kilns on the Loess Plateau in Northwest China

The area around the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River in China is the world-famous Loess Plateau. People living on the Loess Plateau have no houses, so they use the deep, thick, three-dimensional layers of loess there to build a unique kind of housing - kiln.
