Danjiang Reservoir Introduction Overview

Danjiang Reservoir, located in the middle and upper reaches of the Han River, distributed in Danjiangkou City, Hubei Province and Nanyang Xichuan County, Henan Province, the waters spanning the two provinces of Hubei and Henan.

Danjiang Reservoir is Asia's largest artificial enclosure of freshwater lakes, the watershed area is only half of Lake Taihu, but its water storage capacity is six times that of Lake Taihu, mainly because of the depth of the reservoir, the deepest depth of more than 100 meters. The Danjiang Reservoir is the water source for the national South-to-North Water Diversion Project, from which the vast majority of Beijing's urban water and all of Tianjin's water comes.

The Danjiang Reservoir was formed after the Danjiangkou Dam, completed in 1973, was lowered to store water, and consists of the Hanjiang River Reservoir Area and the Danjiang River Reservoir Area. The dam is located in the upper reaches of the Han River between Danjiangkou City in Hubei Province and Xichuan County in Nanyang City, Henan Province, and is a large-scale water conservancy hub project with multiple functions such as irrigation, power generation, navigation, flood control and aquaculture.

Characteristics of Danjiang Reservoir

Danjiang Reservoir is located in the combination of the Jianghan Plain and the Qinba Mountainous Region, with a mild climate and four distinct seasons. The ecological environment around the reservoir is beautiful, rich in water resources, known as the "Asian pool". The water quality of the reservoir is excellent, reaching the first class standard of national surface water, and it is an important wetland reserve in China. The reservoir is rich in aquatic plants and animal resources, rich in biodiversity.

In recent years, the importance of Danjiang Reservoir has become increasingly prominent. As the water source of the National South-to-North Water Diversion Project, it shoulders the important mission of alleviating the water shortage in North China and improving the ecological environment. In addition, Danjiang Reservoir is also a national-level water source protection zone and a national-level ecological civilization demonstration zone, which is pivotal to guaranteeing water security and ecological balance.

In order to protect this precious water resource, our government has taken a series of measures. For example, it has strengthened the environmental protection and management of the reservoir area, strictly controlled the discharge of pollutants and ensured the stability of water quality; implemented ecological restoration projects to improve the ecological environment of the reservoir area; and strengthened the management of water resources, rationally allocated water resources and ensured the sustainable use of the reservoir.
