Compaction degree, also known as compaction degree, refers to the ratio of the dry density of soil or other road construction materials after compaction to the standard maximum dry density, expressed as a percentage.
Methods for measuring compaction in highway subgrade construction include sand filling method, water filling method (water bag method), ring knife method, nuclear meter method, core drilling method, etc.
Commonly used in the actual construction of highway projects are the sand filling method, the nuclear density meter measurement method and the ring knife method. However, the application of the nuclear density meter detection method has considerable limitations. At the same time, the nuclear density meter may cause more radiation damage to the human body.
This limitation has been overcome; the sand filling method has been recognized by all aspects of construction due to its numerical accuracy, controllability of the operation process and representativeness of the results, and has become the most widely used compaction detection method in highway construction.

The standard compaction test is divided into two methods: light and heavy. The former has a hammer weight of 2.5kg and a drop height of 30cm, which is suitable for general highways; the latter has a hammer weight of 4.5kg and a drop height of 45cm. Its unit compaction work is 4.5 times that of light and is suitable for general roads.
