What is electro-gymnastics therapy?

Electric tongue therapy is also called neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy. Usually, the method of applying low-frequency pulse current to stimulate nerves or muscles to cause muscle contraction to restore neuromuscular function is called electrotherapy.

Doctors choose exponential curve wave, triangular wave, trapezoidal wave or square wave according to neuromuscular function. The pulse width is generally 200 ~ 500 microseconds, and the frequency is 0.5 ~ 100 Hz. This current can make muscles contract rhythmically, improve body fluid circulation, maintain normal substance metabolism, promote venous and lymphatic reflux, delay muscle atrophy, prevent contracture and fibrosis, and thus accelerate the compensatory proliferation of healthy muscle fibers and the recovery of nerve conduction function.

Treatment: There are various low-frequency pulse electrotherapy instruments on the market. In family therapy, we should choose instruments that are small in size, light in weight, safe and reliable, easy to carry and powered by dry batteries. The therapeutic electrode consists of a conductive rubber (or metal) plate and an absorbent pad. The absorbent pad is made of sponge or multi-layer flannel with good texture. Soak in tap water during treatment to overcome skin resistance and enhance electrical conductivity.

The patient takes a sitting or lying position, and exposes the treatment site. The main electrode (smaller in area) is connected to the cathode and placed in the affected area or pain area or nerve trunk or muscle movement point; The auxiliary electrode 100 ~ 200 cm2 is connected to the anode, placed between the shoulder blades (when treating the upper limbs) or the waist (when treating the lower limbs), and then fixed with a fixing belt or sandbag. According to the doctor's opinion, choose the pulse waveform, frequency and pulse width according to the condition. For normal innervated muscles, triangular wave or square wave with pulse width of 1 ms and frequency of 50 ~ 100 Hz is selected. For denervated or partially denervated muscles, triangular wave or exponential curve wave with frequency of 1 Hz and intermittent ratio of 1: 2 ~ 5 is selected. Adjust the current output intensity. Stimulation intensity is generally divided into:

Subliminal sensation: the ammeter shows that the patient has no sensation of current action.

Sensory threshold: just a feeling of numbness or trembling.

Sensory threshold: obvious sense of electrical action.

Subthreshold of exercise: it does not cause muscle contraction reaction.

Exercise threshold: it will cause muscle contraction reaction.

Above the exercise threshold: cause obvious muscle contraction reaction.

Limited tolerance: the maximum current intensity that can be tolerated.

The therapeutic dose of electric gymnastics should reach or exceed the exercise threshold. In order to improve the therapeutic effect, patients can be instructed to do active muscle contraction with the rhythm of electrical stimulation or do electro-gymnastics with additional resistance at the same time.

The general treatment time is 10 ~ 20 minutes, but in order to prevent fatigue or ischemia caused by continuous muscle contraction, we can take treatment 10 minutes, rest 10 minutes, and then treat again 10 minutes.

Electromyography is suitable for disuse muscular atrophy, myasthenia, exercise-induced muscle fatigue, various peripheral nerve injuries, uterine inertia, delayed constipation, central paralysis and other symptoms. Hemorrhagic diseases, suppurative inflammation, malignant tumors, heart failure and pacemakers should be regarded as contraindications.
