In order to strengthen imperial power during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Dong Zhongshu created a theory for the emperor system based on the idea of "the unity of heaven and mankind", and put forward the theory of "induction of heaven and mankind".
The term "celestial induction" is an ancient Chinese Confucian theological term. The main schools of thought were the Confucian doctrine, the Mozi doctrine, and the Dong's doctrine. Dong's doctrine inherited the doctrine of calamities from the Gongyang Zhuan and absorbed Mozi's idea of heavenly punishment.
It played an important theoretical role in the construction of the Confucian system. The idea of celestial induction played a positive role in the governance of ancient Chinese monarchs.

During the time of the Han Dynasty Emperor Wu Di, since this period of Dong Zhongshu's theological worldview had just been established, the unorthodox so-called heretical ideas were still putting up a stubborn resistance. Sima Qian, who aspired "to study the interstices between heaven and man, to comprehend the changes of the past and the present, and to realize the words of a family" (Han Shu - Sima Qian's Biography), was a representative of such a figure.
Opposed to attaching religious superstitions to scientific knowledge to keep people in fear, he criticized the superstitious ideas of witchcraft and praying, and held a critical attitude toward the theological worldview of celestial beings.
In the Records of the Grand Historian, Sima Qian demonstrated his extensive knowledge and realistic spirit on some issues related to natural science, and his Book of Heavenly Officials is the first existing work in China that systematically describes all the heavenly officials; The Book of Calendars expresses his ideas about calendars; The Book of Laws, The Book of Rivers and Drains, and The Book of Cargo Shik Lianzhuan describe the knowledge of phonetics, water conservancy, and geography.
And the precedent set by Sima Qian of recording scientific and technological materials in history books was followed by later generations. His pioneering work is not to be forgotten.
