On the differences of landscape painting styles in Song and Yuan Dynasties
Song and Yuan Dynasties are two important periods for the vigorous development of ancient landscape painting in China, and it is also a special period for the transformation of realistic traditional Chinese painting. The transformation of the realistic tradition of landscape painting in Song and Yuan Dynasties is not a sudden and subversive change, but a dynamic evolution process. Both of them consciously and unconsciously practice the proposition of "realism", but the requirements and emphasis on realism are different in different times. Therefore, the title of this paper summarizes the realistic tradition in Song and Yuan Dynasties as "pictographic" and "observing me in things" respectively. This paper not only studies the evolution of the realistic tradition of landscape painting in Song and Yuan Dynasties as a whole, but also focuses on the development and potential trend of the realistic tradition of Chinese painting, trying to provide new ideas and theoretical basis for the development and innovation of realistic style of landscape painting in China in the new period. In the past study of landscape painting in Song and Yuan Dynasties, people paid more attention to the comparison of many differences between them, and were used to naming their artistic styles as "realism" and "freehand brushwork" respectively, and often analyzed them from opposing positions. This paper avoids such research ideas, embarks from the "realistic" painting tradition and relies on a large number of historical materials to investigate the evolution of landscape painting realism in Song and Yuan Dynasties. This paper expounds the evolution of the realistic tradition of landscape painting in Song and Yuan Dynasties, and the differences and inheritance between the two realistic traditions.
