What are the main areas where the Miao are located and what is their population?
The Miao is one of the more populous ethnic groups in Yunnan, and according to the fourth national census, there are 895,700 Miao in Yunnan. 942,600 people were there in 1998, accounting for 7.11% of the total population of ethnic minorities in Yunnan. The Miao live in a relatively decentralized manner, and are found in almost all parts of the province. There are 123 counties with a population of more than 5,000, and there are four counties with a population of more than 50,000, namely, Guangnan, Jinping, Pingbian, and Maguan. Among them, the Miao population in Wenshan and Honghe states in southeast Yunnan is relatively concentrated; the Miao in northern Yunnan are divided into two parts: northeast Yunnan and central Yunnan; northeast Yunnan is the highest terrain on the Yunnan Plateau, where there are two north-south mountain ranges: the Wumeng Mountains, which start in the north in Zhenxiong and Yiliang, stretching southward and disappearing into the Qujing area; and the Wulian Peak, which starts in the north between Suijiang and Yongshan, and parallel with the Wumeng Mountains, and goes south, through Daguan and over the border.
