Square Crochet Pattern 600 Illustrated Tutorial
"Square eye knitting (square knitting/square grid knitting/grid knitting/square grid stitch)" is basically a combination of long and lockstitch stitches, and the pattern is formed by crocheting long stitches within the grid.
A square is formed when the vertical (1 row of long stitches) and horizontal (2 locking stitches and 1 long stitch) dimensions of a grid are the same, and the knitting is balanced as much as possible. Usually, the diagrams for square-eye knitting do not show the knitting symbols, but use a unique method of representing the symbols by drawing patterns in the squares and using the patterns to represent the symbols. Most illustrations will label the symbols corresponding to the pattern, and some will label them in other ways (e.g. the example uses a blue grid, while others fill in the grid with Xs or black dots).
Square eye knitting pattern motifs can be any, using grid paper or adjusting an excel spreadsheet to a square grid and then making the pattern design in the grid. Patterns are not limited to totems or motifs, words and letters are fine.
