More than 1900 years ago, the Hakka people, who moved their families southward after the Central Plains Rebellion, came to the mountainous region of southwestern Fujian after several difficulties. To avoid the onslaught of the outside world, they had to operate by the mountains and live in groups. Single houses were built with local raw soil, crushed stones and wood chips, then connected into big houses, and then built thick and closed earthen buildings. The buildings had wells and granaries. In case of war and bandits, once the gates were closed, they were left to fend for themselves. If besieged, food and water would last for months. Together with the characteristics of warm winter and cool summer, earthquake and wind resistance, the earth building has become the residence of Hakka people who have been attacking and prospering for generations.
