Legend of Hanzhong Xianhao

Hanzhong Xianhao refers to a traditional brushwork. According to legend, it originated from the brushwork of Zhang Zhi, a calligrapher in Han Dynasty, and is known as "the first brushwork in Hanzhong". Its legendary story is as follows:

According to legend, at the end of the Han Dynasty, there was a calligrapher in Hanzhong, Zhang Zhi, whose brushwork was superb and was known as "the first stroke in Hanzhong". One day, while Zhang Zhi was writing, the brush in his hand suddenly broke, so he had to continue writing with the remaining piece. However, he found that the truncated brush became more flexible and the handwriting was particularly vivid and powerful.

Since then, Zhang Zhi often writes with this truncated brush, and gradually, his brushwork has spread in Hanzhong area, known as "Xianhao".

Later, in the Tang Dynasty, Yan Zhenqing, a master of calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty, studied and developed Xianhao, making it a traditional brushwork.

Nowadays, Hanzhong Xianhao is still a favorite writing style of calligraphy lovers and is regarded as an important part of China traditional culture.
