Why is China's ancient science and philosophy so vague and difficult to understand?
For science, China's positivism spirit in ancient times was relatively weak, and he never developed scientific methods, such as hypothesis testing, controlled experiments and other basic methodologies. Therefore, many sciences can only be discussed in metaphysical form.
A typical example is Chinese medicine. What are the meridians? Is it a string of cells or a tube? Or nerves? Nobody made it clear. The ancients, on the other hand, solemnly depicted detailed diagrams of meridians and exhibited acupuncture and so on. I really can't believe these mysterious things are accurate. Why are these meridians and acupoints drawn like this? Why not draw in another way? What is the reaction of sticking the wrong acupoint? Are there any quantitative indicators to measure? It's still mushy Such a theory can only rely on metaphysics, and then render some mysterious folk remedies, ancient imperial doctors, to increase credibility. Positive spirit is very lacking.
I think the easiest way to find the scientific nature of TCM is to do some experiments. Select two thousand patients, half with acupuncture and half with acupoints, and finally see how the effect is. If acupoints are really effective, then let's find out why these acupoints are effective, whether they are nerves, endocrine or something. Describe clearly, not the five elements, yin and yang, qi and blood.
The same is true of many other theories, such as geomantic omen, so-and-so orientation, and a certain structure can honor ancestors. Why not do an experiment, choose two thousand cemeteries, and see how Feng Shui is and how their descendants are? After making an analysis and excluding various influencing factors, if it is really effective, I really believe it and go to the whole grave quickly. Most of the arguments of the ancients are related to the five elements, yin and yang, heaven and earth, qi and so on. They are long and mysterious, so they refuse to do an experiment well.
In ancient astronomy, the calendar was more accurate, after all, what was observed. However, when they explain planetary motion, astronomical phenomena and so on, they have a strong superstitious color and no empirical spirit. Is a comet really a disaster? Have you counted the number of comets in history to see what is the relationship between disasters and peacetime? History books are full of this superstitious description, which is both mysterious and troublesome.
In a word, we haven't developed a scientific method to test these hypotheses. In order to prove the rationality, we can only involve metaphysics and bring some superstitious colors to make people believe. In fact, unfortunately, many things will be found reasonable after careful study.
