Costco, the largest supermarket in America, or Wal-Mart?

The biggest supermarket in America is Wal-Mart. In terms of scale, Wal-Mart is much bigger than Costco, and its revenue is about 3.5 times that of Costco. Wal-Mart, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, USA, ranked 1 in Fortune magazine's list of the world's top 500 enterprises from 20 14 to 20 18. It is also the largest private employer in the world, with more than 2 million employees and the largest retailer in the world.

Costco and Wal-Mart are both large discount stores, but there are some differences. Costco's model is quite simple: collect membership fees from members, and then sell goods in batches at the lowest price. The company almost achieved a break-even in commodity sales, and made full use of its operating profit through membership fees.

For example, Costco's membership fee income in the latest quarter was $776 million, and its operating income was $65,438 +0 1 billion. The operating profit rate of non-members is only about 1% of the company's non-member income.

On the other hand, Wal-Mart is more like a traditional retailer-it happens to be one of the best retailers to take advantage of scale and keep prices low. Wal-Mart does have Sam member stores, which are basically equivalent to Costco's model, but Sam member stores only account for about 1 1.5% of Wal-Mart's total revenue.

The rest came from Wal-Mart's traditional American supermarkets (accounting for 65% of the total revenue) and international supermarkets (accounting for 22.3% of the total revenue). Last quarter, Wal-Mart's operating profit margin was 4.3%.
