China's first mandatory garbage classification cities

In recent years, China is accelerating the implementation of a garbage classification system at the national level.

In March 2017, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Ministry of Housing and Construction (MOH&C) issued the Implementation Plan for the Domestic Waste Classification System, which calls for the first implementation of mandatory classification of domestic waste in 46 cities across the country.

In June 2019, nine departments, including the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, jointly issued the Circular of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and Other Departments on Comprehensively Carrying Out Classification of Domestic Waste in Cities of Prefecture Level and Above Across the Country.
