Meizhou economy
Six pillar industries: tobacco, electric power, building materials, electronic information, electromechanical manufacturing and mining processing. According to historical records, in 1873, German missionaries Bi An and Bian Dezhi founded an academy in Yuankeng Church, Fort Town, Wuhua County, which was the first local middle school. At that time, they set up wooden goals at both ends of the college playground to teach students to play football. As a sport, modern football first appeared in China, and Yuankeng became the birthplace of modern football in China.
Meizhou's reputation as the hometown of football comes from 1956. At that time, according to its long history and development status, the State Sports Commission awarded Meixian County (now Meixian District of Meizhou City) the title of "Football Town".
