Dutch genre painting in the 17th century does not often reflect real life through religious themes like painters in the Renaissance, but directly reflects the daily life of citizens and farmers in a non-ideal way. This genre painting generally includes two kinds of content: farmers' theme and so-called fashion theme reflecting citizens' life. The former inherited and developed the painting tradition of P. Bruegel in 16th century. It may be the works of hals's two disciples, A. Bruwell and A.van austad, which are based on peasant life. Bruwell's oil paintings are small in format, but due to the attention to the overall relationship and the atmosphere of the picture, the figure in the painting appears heavy and simple. He was active in Holland and Flanders before his death, but he was mainly a painter in Flanders. Austad's genre painting has similar advantages, and its picture mood is humorous and optimistic, unlike Bruwell's oil painting, which often has a sense of sadness.
Brewer: The Drunken Fight is written by G. Dao, a painter who works in Leiden, who works in fashion illustration. He studied painting from Rembrandt in the 192s and 193s, and later formed his own painting style. His works often show that a few characters are indoors, with a window on the wall and props such as curtains, books and musical instruments. This kind of work is not large in format, but quite exquisite, and pays attention to the performance of light, which is a fine work of exquisite painting school. N. Maas went to Amsterdam in the late 194s to study under Rembrandt. His fashion illustration, where an old woman is praying or dozing, was all the rage. G meiqu is active in Leiden and Amsterdam, and is good at depicting the comfortable and quiet family life of the middle class. His indoor scene painting is quite delicate and exquisite in technique, which is close to Vermeer's works. G. Terborch, unlike many other Dutch painters of his time, traveled in many European countries and was knowledgeable, not belonging to any local school. The paintings of fashion illustration, which reflect the leisurely life of the upper class of the civil class, were very popular with buyers during his lifetime. He is especially good at finely expressing the texture of women's clothes in wealthy families. J. Sten, who paints both peasant-themed oil paintings and fashion oil paintings, is an accomplished custom painter.
The most outstanding Dutch genre painters are two painters of Delft: Vermeer and P.de Hoch. However, Vermeer was not as popular with the citizens as Terborch and Meiqu, and died in debt because he could not sell paintings. His genre paintings are full of life interest and show great style in artistic treatment. Hoch has lived in Delft since 1653, where he finished some of his best works.
