The color painting method of Peking Opera face painting is basically divided into three categories: rubbing the face, wiping the face, and hooking the face. The initial role of the face painting is only to exaggerate the parts of the five senses and the texture of the face of the characters in the play, and to use exaggerated techniques to show the character, psychological and physiological features of the people in the play as a way to serve the plot of the whole play, but it developed later.

Face painting has evolved from simple to complex, from coarse to fine, from surface to interior, from shallow to deep, and has gradually become a kind of pattern art with national characteristics and with the human face as the means of expression.
