Burning paper on the riverside at Qingming Festival is not a simple paper. We call it paper money, also known as Mingbi. Of course, this is an imaginary object.

Before people invented paper, people buried things used by the dead in graves, or some pottery money made of clay, or some five baht money buried in pottery pots.

After Cai Lun improved papermaking in Han Dynasty, paper became more common, but it was far from luxurious enough to be used for burning.

It was not until the Tang Dynasty that the custom of burning paper money gradually spread among the people. Burning paper money prevailed in the Tang Dynasty, on the one hand, because of the spread of Buddhist thought and some stories of karma and resurrection widely circulated among the people, on the other hand, because paper money was also used in royal sacrifices in the Tang Dynasty.

Even in the Song Dynasty, paper money has become a regular system of royal sacrifices.
