What was ancient Chinese court music called
Ya music
The music and dances used by ancient emperors and kings for sacrifices to heaven and earth, ancestors, and for ceremonies such as pilgrimages and banquets. In the Zhou Dynasty, the six dances (Yunmen, Xianchi, Dachime, Daxia, Dawu, the first four were cultural dances and the last two were martial dances) were referred to as Yaluo. Later rulers of successive dynasties regarded this as the highest model of music and dance, believing that its music was "neutral and peaceful" and its lyrics "elegant and pure", so it was called "elegant music". Various dynasties are based on the rituals of music, song and praise, such music and dance collectively referred to as "elegant music".
