Architectural Analysis of Confucius Hall

This Confucius Hall is from the handwriting of Liu Zhaofeng, the chief designer of Guizhou Architectural Design and Research Institute.

The architectural style of the Confucian Academy has four characteristics:

1. It follows the basic rules of the Confucian Temple and retains the core elements as the basis, which is like the Confucian Temple, but not the Confucian Temple. The so-called "like a Confucian temple", that is to say, with the core elements of the Confucian temple, "but is not a Confucian temple", that is to say, its sacrificial function is weakened, learning and dissemination of function to strengthen.

2, combined with the regional culture of Guizhou, set up the worship of Guizhou famous Confucian scholars Xiangxian Ancestral Hall, Yangming Ancestral Hall; building materials a large number of use of local stone; selection of the characteristics of Guizhou native wood building, gray, black, white as the main color tone.

3, in line with the mountainous terrain: Confucius Hall main axis of the building sitting in the southwest, toward the northeast, in front of the Wencheng Mountain, under the Huaxi River, backed by the mountain, which is the natural landscape trend, not according to the plains of the south-north trend.

4, bold innovation, self-contained: the Han and Tang Dynasty style as the architectural features, a change from the Confucian Temple around the main use of the Ming and Qing styles, mainly reflecting the visual grandeur and the cultural atmosphere of the Confucius era.

As early as 2010, Liu Zhaofeng had already successfully bid for the right to design the Confucius and Mencius Cultural Heritage Protection Project in Qufu and Zoucheng, which was financed by a World Bank loan, and he knew the culture and architectural style of the Confucius Temple, the Confucius Mansion, and the Confucius Grove extremely well. 2011 was the year when he was invited to take part in the competition for the design of the Confucius Hall in Guiyang City. After repeated refinements, Liu Zhaofeng and his team finally came up with an overall concept and program. Although this design only won the second place in the competition because of one vote, Liu Zhaofeng and his team finally won the right to design the Confucius Hall because it was more in line with the requirements of Guiyang City for this project.

"The final implementation of the design program is already the ninth draft of the revision." Liu Zhaofeng said that his design concept is "Han and Tang Dynasty, modern expression", with the building to highlight the culture of humanism.

According to Liu Zhaofeng, Confucius Hall architectural design to the Han and Tang Dynasty style for the architectural features, a change from the Confucian Temple around the main use of the Ming and Qing Dynasty styles, mainly reflecting the Chinese culture of the magnificent atmosphere. Based on the traditional Chinese tic-tac-toe layout as the basis of the innovative layout, a vertical and two horizontal "three-axis interlinked" trend.

The vertical axis is the "Ritual Axis", running from northwest to southeast, symbolizing the core ideas of Confucianism, "Ritual" and "Benevolence", starting from the Latticework Gate, passing through the Dacheng Gate and the Ritual Square, Dacheng Hall and ends at the Apricot Altar. The square in front of the Dacheng Gate has a statue of Confucius, 9.28 meters high, to commemorate the birthday of Confucius; Dacheng Hall is the core of the Confucian Academy, which is the central place for the worship of Confucius.

The two horizontal axes, namely, "wind axis" and "line axis", are from northeast to southwest and horizontal. The "wind axis" symbolizes the Confucian practice of "ruling the country and leveling the world", and on the left side of the axis there is a group of lecture halls, Xishan Academy, which is the main area for future conferences and seminars and scholars' lectures. The "line axis" symbolizes the wisdom and practice of Confucianism, and on the axis there are Xiangxian Ancestral Hall, Yangming Ancestral Hall, Kuiwenge and other buildings, Xiangxian Ancestral Hall is dedicated to the sages and celebrities of Guizhou throughout the ages, Yangming Ancestral Hall is dedicated to the great scholar Wang Yangming of the Ming Dynasty, and Kuiwenge collects the classics of Confucianism and culture.
