May 1 International Labor Day

In the mid-19th century, American capitalism was in a constant economic crisis, with tens of thousands of factories closing and millions of workers losing their jobs. Wages for employed workers continued to fall, while working hours were repeatedly extended to a maximum of 18 hours. As a result, on May 1, 1886, more than 400,000 workers in 11,500 businesses in the United States went on strike on an unprecedented scale to demand an eight-hour workday. The strike caused a strong reaction in the U.S. and the international workers' movement and was ultimately victorious. On July 14, 1889, the Second International held its founding congress in Paris and adopted a historic resolution: May 1 was designated as International Labor Day. Thus, the workers' struggle on May 1 went from the United States to the world, and more and more countries joined the commemoration of May 1, which became a day of international significance.

In order to guarantee the right to survival, health care and education of children in all countries of the world, and in order to improve the lives of children, the conference decided to designate June 1 of each year as International Children's Day. Before that, many countries in the world had Children's Day. 1925, the International Association for the Promotion of Children's Happiness initiated the establishment of a Children's Memorial Day, and Britain, the U.S., and Japan responded positively by establishing their own national Children's Day, with the U.K. stipulating that Children's Day be celebrated on July 14th every year and the U.S. stipulating that Children's Day be celebrated on May 1st. Duanwu Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on June 25 this year. The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the biggest festivals in late spring and early summer. The origin of this festival is said to be related to Qu Yuan, a great poet of the state of Chu more than 2000 years ago. According to the Records of the Grand Historian (史记), Qu Yuan was a minister at the time of King Huai of Chu (楚怀王), and because of his high regard, he aroused the jealousy of the senior officials and Yin Zilan (令尹子蘭), who slandered Qu Yuan in front of the King Huai of Chu (楚怀王)and his successor, King Hà Xiang (顷襄王), which caused the king of Chu (楚王)to gradually distanced himself from Qu Yuan (屈原), not to adopt his advice, and finally even to banish Qu Yuan (屈原). Qu Yuan died a few decades after the death of the state of Chu was destroyed by Qin due to the misuse of the state by the slanderous ministers, but the tragic hero Qu Yuan lived in the hearts of the people of Chu, the following story can be used to illustrate that the people of Chu love Qu Yuan's mood - it is said that after Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, the people of Chu grieved abnormally, and they flocked to the Miluo River to pay homage to the qu yuan, fishermen set up their boats to salvage his body back and forth in the river, and that is the origin of the Dragon Boat. This is the origin of dragon boat rowing. A fisherman also took out the pre-prepared dumplings, eggs and other food, thrown into the river said that the fish and shrimp eat, will not go to bite the body of Dr. Qu. An old physician took a altar of yellow wine poured into the river, said to drug stunned dragon, so that it can not hurt Qu Yuan, not long after the water floated up a stunned dragon, dragon whiskers also stained a piece of Qu Yuan's lapel, people will pull the dragon on the shore and extracted the tendons, the tendons wrapped in the hands of children, neck, and with yellow wine wipe seven orifices, so that those poisonous snakes and pests do not dare to harm these children. The Dragon Boat Festival in the old days there are two very unique customs, one is inserted Artemisia absinthium is said to be full of people early in the morning to go to the surrounding countryside to pick Artemisia absinthium, this plant has the role of clearing heat and detoxification, so people hang them at the door, inserted in the head. The second is to drink xionghuang wine. Xionghuang is a reddish-yellow powder, also has the effect of repelling poison. Adults and wine to eat, children are painted on the forehead, some also write a "king" character. In this way, the summer poison can not be harmful. It is said that the day Qu Yuan threw himself into the river was the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. Since then, every year on May 5, people have to row a dragon boat, eat zongzi, drink xionghuang wine to commemorate qu yuan. In some areas, calamus or mugwort is inserted on the door on the Dragon Boat Festival.
