Why Confucianism and science and technology do not contradict each other
Joseph Lee argues that Confucianism's attitude toward science is negative, and that its excessively humanistic traditions have inhibited the development of science, and that Confucianism has contributed very little to the development of science, "Throughout Chinese history, Confucianism has opposed the scientific exploration of nature and the scientific explanation and promotion of technology" (30). However, Joseph Lee also notes two fundamentally contradictory tendencies of Confucianism with regard to the actual existence of science and technology: "On the one hand, it fostered the germination of science, and on the other, it undermined it. For on the former side, Confucianism is basically rational and opposed to any superstition or even supernatural religion"; "on the latter side, Confucianism devotes its attention to human social life and ignores non-human phenomena, studying only 'things' (affairs), not 'things' (物). Things'", so Joseph Lee concluded that Confucianism was inferior to Taoism in terms of its contribution to science, and that "for the development of science, rationalism is rather less favorable than mysticism.
