What is Baduanjin

Baduanjin is an ancient Chinese qigong technique formed in the Song Dynasty and first appeared in Hong Mai's Yijian Yi Zhi of the Southern Song Dynasty. It consists of eight kinds of body movements, which include limb movement and breath conditioning.

Baduanjin has two meanings, one is that it is a kind of gong method that combines many kinds of exercises; the other is that it is derived from a kind of brocade called "eight-duanjin", which means that the movements are continuous when practicing.

Baduanjin is one of the most widely circulated ancient Chinese guiding arts, which has the greatest influence on the development of guiding arts, and there is a difference between sitting Baduanjin and standing Baduanjin, between northern Baduanjin and southern Baduanjin, between literary Baduanjin and martial arts Baduanjin, and between Shaolin Baduanjin and Taiji Baduanjin.

June 28, 1982, China's Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and the then National Sports Commission issued a circular, the eight brocade and other traditional Chinese fitness as a medical university to promote the "health care physical education class," one of the contents of the 2003, China's State General Administration of Sport to rearrange the eight brocade as a "fitness qi" fitness method. In 2003, the State General Administration of Sport of China popularized the re-arranged Badaanjin and other traditional Chinese fitness methods as part of the "Fitness Qigong" program.
