Brief introduction of Wang Tao, a political commentator in late Qing Dynasty. How did he die?

Wang Tao was a famous political commentator, thinker and journalist in the late Qing Dynasty, and was known as the "scholar with long hair". Wang Yisheng owned many newspapers and made great contributions to the development of modern newspaper industry in China.

In the eighth year of Qing Daoguang, namely 1828, Wang Tao was born in Welfare Village, Changzhou County, Suzhou Prefecture, Jiangsu Province. At that time, Wang Tao was not called Wang Tao. His original name is Wang Libin and his name is Lan Ying. Wang Tao was later changed. 1836, Wangtao County was renamed William Wang after winning the first place in the exam. In addition to these names, Wang Tao has many other names, such as Ziquan, No.2 Middle School, Tiannan Dunshou, R&F Yimin, Songbei Yimin, Ou Fuguong, veteran, boss of Henghuage, Yu Baosheng, and Wang Zun nicknamed "Long Hair Champion".

Wang Tao spent his youth in Puli village, saying that "the rest live in Puli, and the rest are unknown". Learn Chinese characters from my mother since childhood. In the twenty-fourth year of Daoguang, Wang Tao tried Jinshi as a county. Three years later, I went to Jinling to take the exam, but I failed. Although it was not a good thing for Wang Tao at that time, if he was admitted at that time, he might have become one of the tens of millions of officials in the late Qing Dynasty and lost so many great achievements later.

In the second year of Jinling, Wang Tao came to Shanghai to visit his father in Shanghai. On the 27th, I visited Mohai Bookstore hosted by London Institution missionary Madus. Here, I saw the printing factory that is "bright and fiber-free, but belongs to the world of glass", met Mu, Ai and other missionaries, and bought seeds for opening the museum in the future.

1848, Wang Tao's father died of illness. In order to support his family, Wang Tao looked for a job everywhere. At this time, he was hired by Du Mei to work in Shanghai Mohai Bookstore. During this period, Wang Tao read the Bible and later helped translate it into Chinese. In this way, Wang Tao helped missionaries to complete the translation of western works and worked in Moshu Library for thirteen years.

1850, Wang Tao's young wife died unfortunately. Wang Tao is heartbroken. In order to seek spiritual sustenance, he was baptized and became a Christian five years later.

When the Taiping Army attacked Suzhou, Changzhou and Shanghai, Wang Tao wrote a letter to the Taiping Army under the pseudonym of Huang Wan, offering suggestions for the Taiping Army's strategy. Later, this incident was known by the Qing government. In order to save his life, Wang Tao had to leave his relatives and friends and flee Hong Kong. With the help of Midas and his good friend Legg, Wang Tao settled down in the London church dormitory in Hong Kong. At the beginning, Wang Tao helped Jacob translate the Thirteen Classics, and Jacob helped him translate historical classics. It was also during this period that Wang Tao began to write for Hong Kong's Huazi Daily, thus starting his journalism career. During his stay in Hong Kong, Wang Tao collected all kinds of materials and wrote three articles, namely, A Brief Introduction to Hong Kong, A Journey to the Sea and a Journey Away from Things, which described the geographical environment of Hong Kong, the situation of Britain in the future, the government, system and military defense established after Britain divided Hong Kong, and historical materials such as schools, churches and folk customs in Hong Kong in the mid-Kloc-0/9th century. The history of Hong Kong, which lacks historical materials, has been improved.

1867, with the support of friends, Wang Tao went to Europe and began his trip to Europe. He will go anywhere and leave romantic notes. Of course, he's not just having fun. He visited famous universities all over Europe many times, and was even invited to give a speech by Oxford University, leaving a record of the first China scholar to give a speech at Oxford University.

This trip to Europe not only left him with rich materials, but also changed his mind. After returning to Zhihu, I worked as the editor of Liuhe Congtan and Current Affairs Catalogue at 1857 and 1864 respectively. 1874, Cycle Daily was founded, and the rest is the plug-in version of Garden Records. As a result, he became the founder of modern newspaper thought and the first newspaper commentator in the history of China journalism. Wang Tao's contribution to the political theory of newspapers and periodicals has a great influence on the spread of newspapers, political theory and even new ideas in China in the future. At that time, Liang Qichao inherited his reform ideas and published newspapers to express his opinions.

In the fifth year of Guangxu, Wang Tao went to Japan, traveled to Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Yokohama and other cities, wrote Travel Notes of Fusang, and established a large number of reformist intellectuals there.

Li Hongzhang attached great importance to his reform ideas published in Britain and Japan. After returning from Japan, he settled in Song Yin Road on the Wusong River in the north of Shanghai. In the twenty-third year of Guangxu, he died in Caotang, West of Shanghai. It is worth mentioning that in the last stage of his life, he wrote a letter of recommendation to a friend who worked in the shogunate of Li Hongzhang.
