According to the Tibetan scriptures, the topmost bead is 1080 grains, and this kind of bead, because it is too long, is only used by very few great monks and subliminal practitioners, or for famous monks to be used as decorations in great pujas, and in addition, very few people use it. The top grade is 108 grains (110 grains for tantric practitioners), the middle grade is 54 grains, and the rest are 42 grains, 21 grains, 14 grains, 36 grains for Pure Land Buddhism, 18 grains for Zen Buddhism, etc. Each grade has its own meaning. The number of grains of Buddha's beads have their own meanings: 1080 grains, including the 108 numbers of each of the 10 Dharma realms; 108 grains, representing the 108 kinds of pure troubles, or the merits of the 108 Buddhas, or the 108 kinds of immeasurable samsaras, etc.; 54 grains, representing the realm of cultivating one's own body; 42 grains, representing the Bodhisattva multiplying steps such as abiding, walking, moving toward, and earthly; 27 grains, representing the 27 Sages of the voice-hearers; 21 grains, representing the 10 realms of the Buddha and the 10 realms of the Pure Land Sect; and 18 grains of Zen Sect. The 21 grains represent the Ten Grounds of Buddhism and the Ten Grounds of Body Cultivation and the Fruit of the Buddha; the 14 grains represent the Fourteen Endurances (the Three Sages, the Ten Saints, and the Right Enlightenment) as stated in the Rinpoche Sutra. The rest of the 36, 18 and other grains of Buddha beads, some are for the convenience of carrying, one-third or one-sixth of the number of 108, and some are the thirty-six heavenly deities or the eighteen kinds of magical powers of the external world, and have no other meanings. The rosary is a Buddhist use, is to read the Buddha's name or mantra used to count the tool, so also known as the "Buddha beads" or "number of beads". Usually with incense wood turned into small round particles, through the string, but also with jade, agate production. Generally, the number of rosary beads are 14, 18, 21, 27, 36, 42, 54, 108 and 1080.
