Minnan Lantern Festival custom

The customs of Minnan Lantern Festival include eating lanterns, begging and drilling lanterns.

Eating Yuanxiao is also called "holding Ding" and "inviting Ding wine", and most places in southern Fujian have had the custom of Lantern Festival. In recent years, when someone is newly married or a man is added to the family, Yuanxiao must jointly hold a banquet in the ancestral temple to entertain the people, and some people even invite the troupe to perform programs to entertain them. This kind of banquet held in the ancestral temple during the Lantern Festival is called "Ding Table", also called "Lantern Banquet", and the repertoire performed is called "Ding Opera".

Begging for Ding, also known as "begging for Ding", is the custom of women seeking heirs in southern Fujian during the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first month is also the birthday of Mrs. Chen Jinggu, who is in charge of fertility and children. "Light" and "Ding" are homophonic. Therefore, on the night of the Lantern Festival, those women who just got married or were not pregnant for a long time after getting married last year regard watching lanterns in the street as a ceremony to seek heirs in order to have children early. They secretly touched the lamp feet of lanterns, or drilled under the Aoshan Mountain or into the lamp shed in the street, begging Mrs. Linshui for "begging".

Drilling lamp feet, also known as "wearing lamp feet" and "drilling snuff", is a folk activity held in some places in southern Fujian for newly-married brides and newly-added kannika nimtragol who got married in the village last year. Before the Lantern Festival, big lanterns, even Mount Ao, will be installed in the ancestral hall. At the beginning of the Lantern Festival, the bride and new daughter-in-law wear big red flowers or wheat seedlings, a red apron around their waist and a cane with a tail in their hands. Under the leadership of mother-in-law or lucky old woman, they pass by the lights in the front hall in turn, symbolizing that they can contribute to their own clan.
