This world-famous art palace was built at the end of the 12th century as a chateau for the French royal family, and was used as a treasury and archive. From the 16th century onwards, Fran?ois I began a large-scale collection of works of art, a tradition that was continued by successive emperors who enriched the Louvre's collection.
On August 10, 1793, the Louvre opened its doors as a museum.
