How to treat the defects of Jianzhan in Song Dynasty
Tire soil and glaze water
Natural clay and mineral glaze originally contain many uncertain elements, and it is impossible to filter out all impurities after manual elutriation by craftsmen. Many natural impurities still remain in the molded tire or glaze to be applied. Due to the particularity of kiln firing, the output of firing is randomly determined by kiln fire, and fine products are also randomly produced. This uncertainty is beyond manual control. Of course, this is based on the use of traditional firing methods.
Kiln and kiln location
As we all know, the firing of building kilns must adopt reduction firing. In the process of reduction in the kiln, the reducing atmosphere produced by different kiln positions is different, which leads to different effects of the same kind of blue soil and glaze in the same kiln. This is also beyond the control of craftsmen. Of course, oxidation firing or low temperature non-reduction is not discussed.
Deformation and bottom sticking
Clay is not resistant to high temperature, and Zhang Jian's tire is clay with high iron content in Jianyang, and Zhang Jian's firing must be at a high temperature above 1200 degrees, which is another contradictory problem, so the problems of crooked shape, out of round shape and cracking are another difficult problem that Zhang Jian must overcome in firing. Glaze will flow in a kiln with a temperature of 1300 degrees, which is an important factor for the formation of glazed surface of Jianzhan, but at the same time it will stick to the bottom, which is also a relative problem. The author thinks that the acceptance of defects that have local influence (such as sticking to the bottom) is higher than that of defects that have overall influence (such as distortion, roundness, cracking and peeling).
Jianzhan is a highly personalized collectible. The phrase "porcelain is worthless" in the collection of ancient ceramics is applicable to the batch production of Ming and Qing porcelain, especially the official kiln porcelain in Ming and Qing dynasties. The specifications are unified, the firing process is mature and stable, and there is no obvious quality difference between products. Appearance is the most important criterion to distinguish between high and low. However, the high ancient ceramics of Song, Yuan and before, especially the recognized varieties with high artistic achievements, are difficult to fire and have great product uncertainty. For example, Jianzhan, Longquan and Yueyao all have this problem. Whether Longquan kiln burns beige glaze or pink glaze, and whether the kiln is yellow glaze or lake green glaze depends on the kiln fire at random. At present, Song porcelain collectors are looking for a perfect balance between taste and supply. After all, the items with both grades and perfection in the famous kilns have long been irrelevant to the general collectors, and even have nothing to do with the financial strength of the buyers. Just like the record holders of Song porcelain trading, "Ruyao Flower Mouth Wash" and "Southern Song Dynasty Official Kiln Yu Jinyuan Paper Hammer Bottle" are all remnants. Therefore, if you put "porcelain is worthless" on Song porcelain, you can basically only collect a bunch of rough products with low artistic value.
Specifically, it is extremely difficult to build a kiln, and the works are diversified to the extreme kiln mouth. Almost every lamp is an isolated case. There is another characteristic that distinguishes Jianzhan from other kiln mouths. In addition to the random production of fine products, the probability of product defects and the difficulty of firing are directly proportional to the grade.
As Li Da, a master of contemporary architectural art, described in the article Appreciation of Architectural Lamps:
An excellent building lamp is produced on the basis of a large number of waste products. According to the estimation of the author (Li Da), the proportion of Jian Zhan without blister deformation or peeling, sticking to the bottom and other major defects is less than 1%, the proportion of excellent (no obvious defects, smooth stripes) brown rabbit hair is less than110000, and the proportion of excellent silver rabbit hair is less than1/. There are few high-grade building lamps, which we can easily see from a large number of objects and pictures.
What kind of architectural lamps are worth collecting is nothing more than clarifying "defects" and "grades". Satisfy these two points, you can make an accurate judgment on the advantages and disadvantages of each specific building ~
