Why do Hakka people in Guangxi still have the custom of second burial?
Hakkas believe that the quality of feng shui in tombs is related to the fate of families and the reproduction of future generations. Therefore, Hakkas have always paid attention to feng shui burial. In the old society, Hakkas generally had to do three major things: buying land, building houses and repairing ancestral graves. The second factor is geographical environment. Gannan is a basin surrounded by mountains on all sides and with low terrain in the middle. Wuyi Mountain Range is in the east, Jiulian Mountain Range and Dayuling Mountain are in the south, which are relatively closed and have little communication. In addition, droughts and floods are frequent.
In addition, Gannan area belongs to subtropical monsoon climate, and the precipitation distribution is obviously uneven. Landslides, floods, river diversions and tidal erosion often occur, so it is necessary to pick up bones and bury them again. Third, this is a way of national cohesion. Hakka people live in clans and generally live in mountainous areas. Hakka clans agree with the custom of second burial, and believe that the relationship between Hakka clans can be consolidated and maintained through the second burial ceremony.
The fourth soul said that the ancients believed that if people died abnormally, their souls would become evil spirits, bring bad things to people and cause disasters again and again. And the way out of disaster is sacrifice. Hakka people think that the soul of the deceased can be attached to the skeleton, and the second burial can reunite the relatives of the deceased and facilitate the rest and regeneration of the deceased, so they pick up the bones and bury them again. Although the second burial is quite popular in Hakka areas in southern Jiangxi, in the historical period, officials have repeatedly banned the custom of second burial. Despite repeated official bans, this trend is still difficult to change. It can only change slowly through the passage of time.
