Is secular painting the same as genre painting?

Secular painting is different from genre painting.

They are different. Conceptually, genre painting is a kind of figure painting. It is a figure painting with the theme of social life customs. It began in the Han Dynasty, such as tomb murals, stone reliefs and brick reliefs in Liaoyang and Wang Du. However, the inheritance of secular painting to quadrangle style, the imitation of ancient pastels and the reference to western painting methods show that secular painting relies particularly on skills. Secular painting reflects the reality of the present society, while genre painting reflects the yearning for beauty.

Examples of related genre paintings:

The Tujia Custom Map in the Tang Dynasty, the Dream Said by Li Qun in the Five Dynasties, the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival by Zhang Zeduan in the Northern Song Dynasty, the Peasant Wedding Map by Zuo Jian in the Southern Song Dynasty, the Village Dengaku Map by Zhu Guangpu and the Merchant Map are all masterpieces of one generation.

With the rise of painting in Song Dynasty, genre painting became the biggest highlight at that time. In the Southern Song Dynasty, a kind of "church painting", also known as "genre painting", was popular in Lin 'an (now Hangzhou, Zhejiang).

There are many works in Dianshizhai Pictorial in Wu Youru in the late Qing Dynasty, all of which belong to genre painting.

Pictures in New Year pictures, such as Wannian Bridge in Gusu, Harvest Year in Daqing and Wanjia Village, also belong to it. The genre painting after the founding of the People's Republic of China embodies new themes and new characters.
