What is Ninjutsu?
Ninjutsu is a technique used for espionage in Japan. Ninjutsu involves fighting, creating chaos and gathering intelligence. Training in Ninjutsu includes camouflage, escape, concealment, fighting, breaking, geography, medicine and explosives. Ninjutsu was influenced by Chinese martial arts and Sun Tzu's Art of War, and its birthplace was the Iga region. According to research, a monk from China traveled to the area and asked the local samurai if they would like to learn a martial art that combined mind and body, and this became the origin of Ninjutsu. Ninjutsu differs from the Japanese Shinto practice of Ninjutsu, which is generally used for military purposes.
Ninjutsu is divided into different techniques depending on the school, among which are:

Origin of Ninjutsu
Ninjutsu's theoretical foundation was based on Sun Tzu's Art of War, which was brought to Japan from China, and then developed through the practice of Taoism and ambush techniques in the mountains. During the Heian period, the samurai class emerged and the art of ambushing in the mountains was developed by the samurai. In the Genpei era, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who had learned to ambush in the mountains, succeeded in using the mountain ambush technique and completed the theory of attacking surface warfare. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Nanoki Masanari developed the defensive side of the art of war, and at the same time, Ninjutsu and martial arts were separated into different systems.
Schools of Ninjutsu
Ninjutsu began to make great strides during the Warring States period, when there was a great need for ninjutsu, martial arts, and the art of war.
But unlike the art of war and martial arts, ninjutsu was unique. There are several schools of Ninjutsu, which are named after the following places: Musashi, Kofu, Echigo, Shinano, etc.
Three states, Iga, Koga, and Kii, etc.
The latter three states are the most advanced in Japan.
Ninjutsu textbook "Manekawa Jikai"
Originally, before the Yamato invasion, Iga and Koga were not separated and were called IGA.
Later on, as the names of the places were separated between the Muromachi and Sengoku eras, the styles of ninjutsu were separated as well.
But even though the schools were separated, the classic ninja training book was the same, which we call "Manekawa Jikai". This book has all the theoretical foundations and skills to teach the ninja how to perform ninjutsu.
(Webmaster's note: This is the ninja textbook mentioned in "Sengoku Meijin Zenkou" and "Ninja Gentaro".)
Why did Iga and Koga develop their ninjutsu so much?
Iga and Koga are close to Nagoya and are located in a small, enclosed basin surrounded by mountains, creating a world of their own. However, they are strategically important. Because of its proximity to the center of Japan, Kyoto's culture has had a strong influence on the city. There were many shrines, temples and manors. When the manor system collapsed, the landed gentry rose up one by one. In the Warring States period, there were 60 tycoons in such a small area, but since the land was so small, they all wanted to take over each other's land, so each family had about 30-40 soldiers to fight against the "enemy" (this is very similar to the armed battles over land between villages of the Minnan people in the era of the reclamation of the land in Taiwan, and also similar to the fights between the Minnan people and the Minjak people). The competition here is more fierce than outsiders can imagine, the tycoons allied with each other, each other to detect the enemy, but also slaughter each other, once the tycoons were defeated, it would be difficult to rise again, no wonder that such a mountainous area and fierce battles will become the base camp for the development of Ninjutsu. As time went on, a balance developed between the local communities, and the art of ninjutsu came to dominate the country.
The origin of the theory of ninjutsu
Ninjutsu came from the peasantry, not from the noble samurai.
Ninjutsu's mountain ambush techniques came from the mountain warfare experience of those who lived in Yamato, Yoshino, Kurama, Nenrai, and Iga.
Kyoto is the birthplace of yin-yang-do, a form of jutsu used in ninjutsu, because it is not far from the center of the Buddhist Tantric sects of Bishop and Takano. It is not far from the home of the Buddhist Tantric sects of Hita, Takano and others.
The martial arts side of Ninjutsu is derived from the Ryusei-ryu Sword School and the Hosoin-ryu Gunnery.
Chinese and Korean immigrants and ninjutsu
The Yamato court welcomed foreigners with skills to settle in Japan. Therefore, a large number of people from China and Korea came to Japan. For example, many of the makers of pottery, armor, and clothing came to Japan from China and Korea. These people usually settled in Kyoto, and some moved to nearby Iga or Koga to work.
Additionally, there are a lot of ethnic minorities and naturalized people (foreigners who have become Japanese and changed their surnames to Japanese).
For example, in the early days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, when Hattori Hanzo was working with Ieyasu, many people from Iga and Koga moved with Hattori to Edo. The town of Matubo is a transformation of the towns of Iga and Koga. There is still the name of Hanzomon (the old house where Hattori Hanzo lived). It's said that Hattori Hanzo was a convert. His family was originally Chinese, surnamed Qin, but when they settled in Japan, they changed their Japanese name to Hattori in order to become one with the local people, and the Hattori family was born.
Influence of foreign craftsmen
In addition, technology introduced by foreigners, such as gunpowder, took root in this area, making it a place where gunpowder was manufactured from the earliest times in Japan. Other craftsmen also took root here, such as craftsmen and doll makers. .... All kinds of craftsmen came here... As a result, there were many such people in the Iga and Koga regions, and the ninja were able to use their skills as folk craftsmen for espionage work in the future. However, in the society of that time, the status of these people was not high (in their homeland, China and Korea, the status of these people was not high, the merchants were at the end of the four people, namely, soldiers, peasants, industrialists, and businessmen, of course, in Japan, there are also the classes of soldiers, peasants, industrialists, and businessmen, but the soldiers were the Shidai, or samurai).
Favorite Ninja General - Shingen Takeda
Since Shingen hated having his country's secrets known to others, he liked to train ninjas.
He loved to use the ninjas he had trained (he called them "Kabuto" and "Sansho", which was also the Takeda name for ninjas). The origin of the "Kabuto" is that they were vagabonds from Koshi, Noboribetsu and Echigo, or a group of bandits organized them and taught them mountain warfare and other fighting techniques, and they became ninjas. In addition, the "Sanjin" was a generic term for the "Mami," "Mifune," and "Megumi," who were specialists in scouting and espionage. Shingen sent Tomitago Saemon to take charge of the "Three" ninjas.
Hideshi Hashiba and Kohroku Hashiba
It is known that Hideyoshi Hashiba, at his wits' end, turned to Kohroku Hashiba and lived in his house for free.
Hesuga Kohroku was an active "night bandit" in the Mino area (bandits, at best, were called samurai, an army that did not find a master to employ them, at worst, were robbers who came out at night to steal money). Since the robbers were usually not poor, they were hospitable enough to let those who had nothing to eat to join them and eat at their homes. Later on, these people helped Hideyoshi to take over Mochizuku Castle. However, because Nobunaga hated the poor military discipline of the army, Hesuga Kohroku and his band of bandits stopped killing people and goods, but the skills they had developed during their bandit days became a good condition to become ninjas, and they became ninjas in Hashiba Hideyoshi's army. The ninjas were able to perform well in all the battles of the war.
The legend of the ninja (repost)
Origin and organization
The ninja and the techniques they wielded ---- ninjutsu, a product of the shogunate era in Japan around the 17th century, reached its peak during the Tokugawa shogunate. The origins of ninjutsu can be traced back to the seventh century A.D., and various schools were gradually formed, the more famous ones being the Iga school and the Koga school.
Ninjutsu was passed down from generation to generation by families of ninja. In each school, there is a strict hierarchy similar to that in the Qing and Hong gangs in China. The highest-ranking ninja, called a "shinobi," commands a faction or acts as the overlord of a party. Under him there are many "Nakanobu", each of which manages a small group of 30 or 40 "Shonin". Nakanobu are responsible for conveying the orders of the upper ninja and reporting the situation of the lower ninja to the upper ninja, playing the role of a bridge. The shinobi are the lowest level of ninja, specializing in missions.
Superhuman Ninjutsu
Ninjutsu skills superhuman, good at using swords, hooks and other weapons and shuriken and other concealed weapons; they can fly over the eaves and walk on the wall, running in the sand without making a sound; hold their breath in the water for up to five minutes, such as special equipment can stay underwater for a day and a night; they are good at fighting on the surface of the water and under the water, and even dive to the bottom of the ship, eavesdropping on the boat's conversation! ......
The ninja's superhuman skills were acquired through grueling special training at an early age. Children of ninja families, both male and female, are required to carry on the tradition of their ancestors' profession, and are usually trained from the age of five. There are five types of training: balance, agility, strength, durability and special techniques.
Balance training begins with walking on bamboo poles, and when they can walk on the rounded poles without slipping, they gradually raise the poles to a height of 30 to 40 feet, so that they can run and jump as if they were walking on a flat surface, and so that they can climb up and down trees, roofs and walls, and walk as if they were flying.
The agility training is the same jumping over ropes with razor blades stuck in them, and cornering and hurrying through narrow paths full of sharp blades and gun tips.
The training of durability and strength is the most grueling, such as hanging from a tree with both hands, supporting the whole body, and below the concealed weapons, so that you can not let go and jump, to stimulate the body's potential for long-lasting support through fear. Long-distance running is the ninja's basic skills, requiring continuous running on the 50 kilometers of road without stopping to rest, walking a hundred miles a day is commonplace.
Special skill training is even more surprising. In addition to the above, there is also hand-to-hand combat, poisoning and detoxification. Masquerade is even a specialty of the ninja, as they can create fake faces of human skin and change genders. Some people have done a test, let a ninja in the crowd through, by a few people on the side of the identification, the results of the people see are not the same, short, tall, fat, thin, varying, ninja can be "a thousand faces". There is also the art of concealment, the beginning of this article said that the ninja in broad daylight suddenly disappeared is a kind of ninja in the forest dug a hole in the ground beforehand, the hole laying on the grass ash, hole covered with withered grass, when he scurried into the grove, a leap disappeared into a hole in the ground, noiselessly. The newest addition to the list is the newest addition to the list, the newest addition to the list, the newest addition to the list.
Kumanoji's secret
In the Shogunate era, the ninjas were responsible for countless bizarre and shocking incidents, and the destruction of Kumanoji's secret book is a glimpse of this.
The head of Kumanoji Temple has a secret book of Chinese martial arts that he never shows to anyone, and a samurai named Morinao Ueno tries to get his hands on it. Ordered to act, the ninja Horikawa inquired and found out that the secret book was kept in a small building inside the temple, which was too heavily guarded to enter. So he spent seven months digging a tunnel to get under the small building, only to realize that the house was built on a large rock and could not be dug through. But the presiding officer of Kumanoji had already discovered that someone was digging a tunnel to try to steal the secret book, and he sent a man to suddenly attack with fire at the entrance to the tunnel, burning Horikawa alive. Ueno sent another ninja, Hachiro, to steal the secret book. Hachiro is young, beautiful, and can sing and dance well, so he is recruited as a servant boy, and is dressed up by unscrupulous monks to be used as an object of homosexual desire. Hachiro finally catches the interest of the headmaster of Kumanoji Temple, and the two hook up. Hachiro skillfully exploits the jealousy of the deputy headmaster, and finds out that the headmaster reads secret books in the middle of the night, hiding in a secret room with very dim light. One night, when the host in the secret room under the shadow of the light read the secret book, Hachiro like a cat sneaked into the secret room, strangled the host, will be the secret book into the cylinder, and immediately fled back to return to the order.
The impatient Ueno Mori straight from the hands of Hachiro grabbed the book, simply ignore Hachiro told him the presiding officer of the Kumanoji Temple in the secret room under the dark light to read the secret of the important details, and walked into the room, the secret from the metal cylinder out of the spread on the sunny table to read. A strange thing happened, before he finished reading the first paragraph, the entire text of the secret book began to fade, this first paragraph is precisely to explain that the secret book is written with a kind of special ink that disappears at the sight of light. The owner of the secret book was warned not to let it see the light, otherwise the text would all disappear invisibly. A secret book of great value was destroyed in this way, but the ninja in the theft of the secret book of all kinds of extraordinary means to make people unforgettable.
Pathetic endings
Because most of what the ninjas did was secret and dangerous, involving power struggles at the top, their endings were often very pathetic.
The danger comes first and foremost from their employers. After achieving their goals by any means necessary, these insidious and venomous social leaders often kill the ninja on a mission to silence them for fear of leaking the inside story of what happened.
The ninja, although superhuman, but there is inevitably a miscalculation, there is a ninja braved the summer heat, sneaked into the floor of a vassal's residence behind the floor, motionless ready to eavesdrop on the vassal's inner house of the secret talk. But in the evening, he was detected by a guard, who pierced the floor with a spear and killed the ninja hiding underneath. It turned out that summer mosquitoes were biting around the ninja, and although the ninja didn't make any noise, the buzzing mosquitoes revealed his whereabouts.
The ninja's worst enemy was the samurai. The samurai were in the open, and the ninja were in the shadows, so the samurai hated the ninja the most, and once the ninja was captured by the samurai, he would certainly be executed by the most brutal punishments. The ninja, once captured by the samurai, would be subjected to the most brutal torture. Skinning was one of the tortures, where the skin was peeled off piece by piece, extremely painful, but not immediately dead. This is why the ninja would never let the samurai capture them alive. Here is the story of one of the most legendary ninja of all time. This ninja was named Sarutobi, because he had the skill of climbing and leaping in the trees like an ape, coming and going without a trace; at the same time, he was also very good at hand-to-hand combat, so people could not catch him. Once he was sent to spy on a general who lived in a castle, and overheard a secret conversation between the general and a minister. But when he left the castle he was discovered by the guards, and he immediately leaped up to the ramparts, skillfully avoiding the pursuers, but as he jumped down into the garden he stepped on a concealed steel bear-trap, which clamped his leg tightly. At that moment the guards under the Shogun surrounded him, and Sarutobi, seeing this, cut off the pinned leg with a single blow, and escaped on one foot for a long distance. But in the end, he lost too much blood and could hardly support himself. Seeing that the guards were getting closer and closer, and knowing that he had no hope of escaping, Sarutobi simply stood still, shouted insults at the pursuing guards, disfigured his own face with his sword to make it unrecognizable, and then swung his sword to slash his own neck. Thus sadly ended the life of a renowned ninja.
With the advancement of science and technology, the art of ninjutsu was gradually lost. According to legend, the ancestor of ninjutsu is our country's "Sun Tzu's Art of War", which is yet to be proved by historians.
